When you pick up a guitar, you’re not just holding an instrument, you’re holding a story. At Munson Guitars, every piece we craft carries a story rooted in place, purpose, and principles. We build sustainable guitars in the UK for players who want more than mass-produced instruments, they want meaning.
The Art of Building Locally
Every Munson guitar begins its life in Britain, not just in our workshop, but in the forests, the forges, and the hands of local makers who share our values. We use timber sourced from responsibly managed English woodlands, chosen not just for tone but for sustainability. We partner with British pickup manufacturers, string specialists like Rotosound, and case makers right here in the UK.
Why? Because when you buy a sustainable guitar in the UK, you deserve something with a soul, not just a serial number.
By using local materials and suppliers, we reduce our carbon footprint, support the British economy, and ensure a level of quality that’s traceable, personal, and honest.
Sustainability Without Compromise
Too many instruments today are built with endangered woods, mass-produced overseas, and shipped across oceans, all for convenience or aesthetics. But beautiful tone doesn’t require endangered rainforest hardwoods. In fact, some of the best-sounding guitars we’ve ever built came from woods grown right here in England.
We make a point of avoiding endangered species and unsustainable imports. This isn’t just about ticking boxes; it’s about respecting the planet and the craft. Our woods are carefully selected for resonance, stability, and character, and the result is a guitar that not only sounds exceptional but reflects an ethical choice.
So when someone asks, “What’s your guitar made from?”, you can answer proudly, and responsibly.
Behind the Build: A Guitar’s Journey
The journey of a Munson guitar begins with a conversation. What do you play? What inspires you? What kind of tone are you looking for? From there, we help guide the process: selecting wood species, neck profile, pickups, finishes, and more.
Every detail is intentional. Once specs are locked in, the build begins: carefully shaping the neck, voicing the body, assembling and testing components. No two builds are identical, and that’s the point.
We don’t build guitars on speculation, we build them for real players with real stories. The result is a sustainable guitar UK players can be proud to own.
Meet Our Makers
Our guitars are made possible thanks to an ecosystem of British craftsmanship. Our pickups are wound in small batches by engineers who care as much about tone as we do. Our strings come from Rotosound, a British icon known for decades of quality. Our wood suppliers understand how grain and moisture affect resonance. Even our cases are handmade in Britain to ensure everything, from hardware to hinges, supports the quality inside.
This isn’t outsourcing. It’s collaboration.
Why Custom? Why Now?
One of the most common things we hear from players is: “I didn’t realise how much a guitar could feel like mine until I played one made for me.”
Here are a few reasons clients come to us, and keep coming back:
1. Personal Connection
There’s something deeply meaningful about an instrument that’s made just for you. It’s not pulled from a shelf, it’s built with your voice, your tone, and your story in mind.
2. Superior Tone
British-grown tonewoods like ash, sycamore, and walnut have distinct, warm, expressive voices. Paired with locally made pickups and precise craftsmanship, they create a sound that’s full, articulate, and yours alone.
3. Ethical Satisfaction
More players care where their gear comes from. Choosing sustainable guitars made in the UK isn’t a compromise, it’s a statement. You’re investing in music and the future.
4. Long-Term Value
A factory-made guitar is built to sell. A custom guitar is built to last. With high-quality parts and personal care behind every build, a Munson guitar is made for the long haul, both in durability and relevance to your playing journey.
5. Supporting British Craftsmanship
Choosing a locally made instrument supports small-scale makers, independent suppliers, and a thriving ecosystem of British craftsmanship. Your purchase keeps skills alive, families supported, and traditions growing.
Wood With a Voice
Let’s talk tonewood. British hardwoods like ash, walnut, Yew and sycamore aren’t just environmentally sound, they sound phenomenal. Ash offers snap and clarity, perfect for funk or clean blues. Walnut gives a rich, rounded tone with beautiful grain. Yew and Sycamore blend warmth with brightness, and look as good as they sound.
And because these woods are grown in our climate, they’re naturally more stable in UK conditions. That means fewer surprises down the line in terms of warping or shifting tone.
Tone With a Conscience
Choosing a Munson guitar means making an ethical choice without sacrificing sound. We use water-based finishes and low-impact methods whenever possible. Our waste is minimal, and offcuts are used to make smaller products.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about improving with every build. Sustainability isn’t a feature; it’s part of the foundation.
Case Study: A Bass Guitar for Mike
Mike, who plays bass in the band Blind Tiger, came to us with some particular requirements for a new instrument but had not found anyone who could make this for him. We talked at length about his playing style, the kind of music he played and what he was searching for in a new guitar. We discussed what making sustainable guitars really meant and he was very much onboard with the philosophy.
“Carl provided drawings and suggestions for how the body, neck and hardware could look, based on my requests, and over time we refined the design. He also showed me pictures of a selection of source woods to give me a choice, asked me how I would like the guitar to be finished. He made me welcome at his workshop, when I asked if I could visit. There he was able to show me different materials for the fingerboard, and advise me as to their individual advantages.
I love the contrast of the organic striped effect of the front of the body, which looks rather like the stripes on a tiger’s body (the band I play in is called Blind Tiger) with the sleek black of the fingerboard, with just the small blue bird mask inlay around where the 12th fret would be, to make the instrument that bit more special. The sound is warmer and richer than many other instriments(even fretlesses) I’ve played.
The playability is very pleasant; it has the lowest action of any fretless I’ve ever played, the gap between the strings and the fingerboard is consistent all the way along the neck, and the neck feels comfortable in my left hand, so I can play a set without getting tired. As for the weight, it’s about half the weight of my Fender, so my shoulder doesn’t ache by the end of a gig.”
We worked together over a few calls to get it dialled in. The result? A lightweight, expressive instrument that sounds just as warm unplugged as it does through an amp. Mike says it’s the first guitar he’s ever truly bonded with.
It now goes with him to every gig.
